Out of the fifty top websites in terms of traffic, over 30 end in dot-com. It should come as no surprise that the most visited sites end in that extension because it is used for more than 20 million websites while dot-net, the next most popular extension is used by about 5 million sites. Google remains the most popular website in the world with about 2 billion searches every day, Yahoo is second followed by YouTube.
The domain names for the most popular sites defy conventional wisdom because they do not necessarily reflect what type of service is offered. Experts will tell you to select a domain name which says something about your business and can help drive up your google ranking. They also tell you to pick a simple name that is easy to remember and that is something that the most popular websites have done well. Google , Yahoo and YouTube are all now household names.
The other top websites have simple names that are easy to remember as well. Live.com is number four followed by Facebook. That social networking site has just reached a half billion users and the only question is how long it will take the site to hit 1 billion. Founder Mark Zuckerburg says it is very rewarding to be growing so quickly. MySpace is another of the top ten websites and offers a similar social networking experience. Blogger.com is just as popular as a host site for thousands of different web blogs on a wide variety of subjects.
What makes these websites so popular are either the service they provide or the content. In Google’s case, it is the search engine that people are after. On YouTube, people go for the video content. Yahoo’s success is a mix of those two with valuable services like free email combined with good content in the form of news and sports stories.
